To ensure a positive user experience, certain kinds of content are not allowed on Nearby Notifications. Once Google is notified of a potential policy violation, they review it and can restrict access to the content and limit future access to products. 

Some of the content that is considered a policy violation are - 

Adult Content

Messages that facilitate or promote sexual gratification or sexually explicit content are not allowed. This includes - 

  • Pornographic, sexually explicit, or erotic content.
  • Content that describes sexual acts or sex toys.
  • Escort services or other services that may be interpreted as providing sexual acts in exchange for compensation.
  • Content that describes or encourages bestiality.

Child Safety

Any content that aims at exploiting children is banned. Google can remove and report such content as per the laws in the country and can take further action. 

Dangerous and Widely Illegal Content

Nearby Notification should not be used to engage in illegal activities or to promote goods, services or information that can cause or facilitate serious or immediate harm to people or animals. The only exception to this is general information for educational purposes. 


Any sort of message that may be used to harass, bully, threaten or incite others to do the same is not allowed. An attempt to use Nearby Notifications to do so or sexualize someone in an unwanted way, reveal someone else's private information that may be used to carry out threats or harassment may result in having the content removed and permanently banned from using the service. 

In case of an emergency, Google can escalate imminent threats of serious harm to law enforcement agencies. 

Hate Speech

While Google platforms can be used for free expression, they do not condone content that promotes discrimination, hatred or that incites violence against minority groups or individuals based on their race, ethnic origin, nationality, sex, gender identity, secual orientation, religion, age, verteran status, disability or any other characteristic that may be associated with marginalization or systemic discrimination. 

Malicious Content Distribution

Nearby Notifications should not be used to transmit viruses, malware or any other malicious or destructive code. Content that can harm or interfere with the operation of the networks, servers or other infrastructure of Google or others should not be distributed. Google's Services must not be used for phishing scams. 

Mature Text / Profanity

Any content that includes profanity, slang that is sexually graphic and offensive or terms that are commonly associated with pedophilia, bestiality, or sexual violence must not be published. 

Personally Identifiable Information

Sensitive and confidential information such as credit card, bank account numbers, national ID numbers, account passwords, images of signatures, personal health documents of other people should not be published without due permission.

Regulated Goods & Services

Regulated goods and services such as alcohol, gambling, pharmaceuticals and unapproved supplements, tobacco, fireworks, weapons, and health/medical devices should not be promoted or sold through Google's platform.


Spam including unwanted promotional or commercial content that is created by an automated content or repetitive content or content that appears to be a mass solicitation is not allowed. Content that has no relevance to the specific location where the user receives the message is also not allowed. 

Terrorist Content

Terrorist organizations are not permitted to use Nearby Notifications for any purpose, including recruitment. Content related to terrorism such as promoting terrorist acts, inciting violence or celebrating terrorist attacks is strictly prohibited. 

Content related to terrorism for educational, documentary, scientific or artistic purpose must have enough information so that viewers understand the context.

Violence & Shocking Content

Content that is violent or gory that is intended to shock, sensationalize or be gratuitous is not allowed. If such content is posted from a news, documentary, scientific or artistic standpoint, enough information should be provided to give people context. In cases where the content is extremely violent or shocking, no amount of context will allow the content to remain on Google's platform.
Encouraging others to commit specific acts of violence is also not allowed.
